Continuing our trend of delving into the past drug barons who have graced our land, we will be looking at one of the most infamous on our list and the world in general, he was known b many names, notably, the Godfather, He is as synonymous to drug dealing as mouse is to cat, he really brought his A-game when it came to drug dealing.
Although seen as a criminal by many, Escobar was known as a hero in Medellin since he was a natural at public relations and he worked to create goodwill among the poor of Colombia. To his credit were the building of football fields and multi-court sports as well as sponsoring children’s football teams which gained him popularity among the poor. As a show of gratitude, they often help Escobar to avoid police capture by serving as lookouts, hiding information from authorities or doing whatever they could to help him. Griselda Blanco (The Godmother) was also known to be part of his drug cartel and was also reported to have conducted a passionate relationship with Escobar.
As the saying goes, ‘one can only evade capture so much’, his nemesis eventually caught up with him when his arch-rivals and the US government colluded to have him killed though, separate at first, Search Bloc by the US government and Los Pepes by his rivals contrived to have him killed when after about sixteen months, he was still yet to be caught. He was eventually killed amid another one of his escape attempts failed by being shot but details of whether he was really shot or he committed suicide remains debatable since there was evidence of him being shot through the ear and there were details by his brothers who stated that Pablo always reiterated that if he was ever cornered, he would shoot himself in the ears. He was survived by his widow, son, and daughter who fled Colombia in 1995 and also his sister along with his two brothers. Life of crime never pays.
